A Portland police officer was killed Sunday night when his car ran into the rear end of a rolling dump truck in Vancouver.

Adam Cushman, 35, a criminalist with the bureau, was returning home from work.

Sheriff's deputies responded to the scene of the accident in the 7300 block of Northeast 182nd Avenue about 6:30 p.m. They said the driver of the dump truck, identified as 53-year-old Clyde Andrews of Vancouver, reported that the truck had stalled while part way into the northbound lane.

In order to restart the truck, the Andrews told police, he had to turn off the truck's lights. Police said he was able to restart the truck and it was rolling backward into the northbound lane when Cushman's northbound 1996 Honda Accord collided into the back of it.

Cushman, who is from Vancouver, was pronounced dead at the scene, Clark County Sheriff's Office said.

Cushman started with the Portland Police Bureau in July 2000 and was a patrol officer at the Southeast Precinct. He was promoted to criminalist in March 2006.

Mary Wheat, spokeswoman for Portland police, said Cushman is survived by his wife and two children, ages 10 and 12.

The most recent Portland police death was 38-year-old Sgt. Craig Mendenhall, who died of a heart attack on Dec. 20.

Police did not issue any citations in the accident.
